Book publishers, specialty publishers, magazines, advertising agencies, filmmakers, web designers, graphic artists, interior decor firms, corporate creative groups, and
others use stock photography to fulfill the needs of their creative
assignments. Stock photography consists of existing photographs that can be
licensed for specific uses.

You can earn an income by submitting your photos to stock photography sites. Submit only your best photos at first because stock photo sites are pretty strict about accepting your photos (at least until you've submitted quite a few).

Buyers of stock photography save time and money (cheaper than hiring their own photographer to do the same thing), but they also give up
creative control of the photos. Most buyers don't care about that so much though.

Once your pictures are approved, as you submit more photos, you will get paid every time someone downloads one of your photos. Digital Photography: Business or Hobby?

If you're like many with digital cameras, you occasionally take some great pics that you could edit with professional software and sell. You could also resize and package them onto T-shirts, coffee mugs, vases, glass ornaments, window decals, bumper stickers, posters or giant posters, coloring books, photologs, photostory books etc.

You could actually make a business of photography if you put out the effort required to do it. Some people kind of stumble into the business side of digital photography when they have initial success selling their stock images of furniture or happy faces or flower-arranged vases or sports images to magazines, textbook publishers etc. $100-250+ a day is possible if you're reasonably well-organized and you keep your photos properly indexed like an encyclopedia in alphabetical file folders in a filing cabinet AND ALSO on CD-ROMS or DVDs, you copyright your photos, and if you contact the growing number of photo-buyers online and off, domestic and internationally-based to build your business. It's always best to build up your stock of photos in your file cabinet before approaching resellers.

Yes, it is possible to make a business out of your hobby. You do however at some point need to decide if your income will be considered business income or personal income derived from your hobby. You might be saying to yourself "Who Cares?"

The IRS cares a lot about anyone making unreported income. The IRS and other government bureaucracies want to determine if you're a hobbyist or a business. Never mind the legal issues involved here. Most anyone who has viewed Aaron Russo's 'Freedom to Fascism' knows the IRS operates unconstitutionally and that there is no current or explicit law that grants the US Government the power to tax a US citizen's personal income.

You need to ignore all the facts and simply understand that the IRS auditors and agents have their own families to support and are 'just doing their jobs' - same as you and me. Whatever they do, remember, it's never personal. Forgive and forget. After all, it's only your money. They want you to be fair and honest in reporting your income to them. After all, we do have a voluntary system of reporting.

You do not want them to determine that you're only a hobby and not a real business. If you've been deducting expenses, you would want to be considered a legitimate business. To avoid IRS scrutiny, you should keep yearly sets of receipts of expenses you incur for lenses, camera bodies, tripods, memory cards, file folders, photo paper, photo editing software, postage, gasoline, RT mileage driven, repairs.

The IRS will want to see a pattern of purchasing behavior that shows you are serious about your business. Advertising expenses would almost always be included in your receipts - that shows your work is for sale.

Keep all your personal expenses like groceries, power, water and tel bills separate from your business expenses like those mentioned above. If you file as a sole proprietor like most photographers, you need to complete a Schedule 'C' to your 1040 form detailing all your expenses. The Schedule C let's the IRS know that you have a business and expenses related to it.

Smart photographers who are serious about their business and who are organized will organize their business as an LLC (Limited Liability corporation or an 'S' Corporation. Doing this almost always convinces the IRS that you are serious about doing business with your camera and are not just another photo hobbyist claiming expenses on your tax return.

I do know that web video software on the internet often costs up to a thousand dollars or more so when I found a piece of software that does what utube does for less than $100, I had to post this. You and I both know that posting good video is a great way to get noticed and make a name for yourself. Hordes of marketers are trying to find the best and lowest-cost way to produce their own pro-type videos online and in their emails. Videos are often more interesting. Important Digital Photography Tips

Important Digital Photography Tips

Red Eye is a common problem with image capturing because of on-camera flash. To avoid it, move your flash off-axis and choose a connecting cord and flash bracket. Then simply bounce the flash off of something like a wall or ceiling. An alternative is to use a remote flash trigger to keep the flash off the camera.

After you transfer your digital images from your media card to your laptop or computer, make sure the photos open up and are saved off of the camera’s card before you delete the files. I.E. don’t accidentally delete the images without saving them elsewhere and making sure they are really there first. That can be a bummer, especially with wedding photos or other important 1-time occasions where you can’t do re-takes.

Always carry along extra batteries, your re-charger and adapter, equipment instructions and an extra media card or two. You never know where you might need your supplies, and don’t want to miss great shots.

If you want to use your photos that have people in them, plan ahead and find simple permission forms to print out and stash in your photo bag. To locate forms, search online for “permission for photos form” and customize one for your own company or private brand. Check in local library photography books for a quick one to print out, too, or at a local professional photo shop for other sources.

Try to get something to compare size with in your photos. For example, instead of just taking a shot of a flower, place your hand in the background as if you’re gently holding or caressing it in the palm of your hand – only without actually touching it.

Video Sites & YouTube

Did you know that YouTube plans to start sharing advertising revenue with its members. If you post a video, YouTube will place an advertisement at either the beginning or end of your video. It really doesn't even have to be your video as I understand it. This should happen as early as the end of 2007.

So where did YouTube come up with such a brilliant idea? Not on their own, I assure you. Other sites are already offering revenue sharing. Sites like Revver which is a video sharing site that splits advertising revenue 50-50 with the creator of the video. There is also Brightcove that does pretty much the same thing. You can also sell your videos so they can be syndicated on other sites.

Yes, there are a lot of ways to make money with digital cameras - including videos. Google and Yahoo and AOL are into the video business too and have started including video ads etc.

The online world is in a constant state of ebb and flow. What's important is for you to get a decent digital camera, learn to use it and start submitting your photos and videos to various sites to start making a little money. This trend will only grow.

Just try to create something decent. Lately, I've been seeing some total garbage that doesn't deserve to be seen by anyone. Spare us if you won't take the time to plan your shots and storyboard. Thanks!

Do News Media Buy Photos?

Many news publishers do not pay for photos but there is a growing trend (still in its infancy) in which news organizations are beginning to accept and use photos submitted by individuals. Newspapers like Florida Today belong in this category.

Reuters pays for pictures that it distributes for publication. It has partnered with Yahoo for videos submitted by private individuals. http://news.yahoo.com/you-witness-news

The pictures and videos you submit can be of varying quality - unlike stock photos or contest submissions where you have to pay attention to your composition, lighting and other factors.

Visit Spymedia and you may find buyers for your photos of particular sporting events - even high school games or events!

Yes, there are plenty of places to submit your photos for sale or for exposure. These are just a few. Digital cameras are a must these days. You can get some great ones at a very reasonable cost. Many have short video-clip capabilities. There are many to choose from. Try DigitalCameras for a review of some good ones at reasonable cost. There are also some good books there. Check it out.

Entering photo contests is a great way to get exposure for your pictures and perhaps earn some money for a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place showing. If a photo contest doesn't offer cash prizes, it almost always will offer some kind of prize to the winner(s). Some contests have separate entries for amateurs and professionals. Some are limited to amateurs. Remember that if you are selling your 'stock photographs', you may not qualify as an amateur.

So where are these photo contests? A few reputable ones are National Geographic and its sister publications from the National Geographic Society . They regularly sponsor photo contests.

The Everyman contest awards cash prizes and it's a good one to start with. Another one to enter is the Smithsonian magazine.

Have you noticed the huge number of photos and videos available online in the past several months? Amateurs are creating much of what you see and are cashing in on the trend.

The business of photography used to be considered a career in which one had to study at a photography institute like the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara for four years before one could support a family.

This is natural since images had to be printed in order to be marketed, and portfolios, mailers, and other marketing pieces had to be made and sent out - highly technical stuff to be sure. By far the biggest “cost” was the time required to do all these things (though money was still an important factor). Digital Photograph work today may never command the price that Edward Steichen's "The Pond--Moonlight" did in February, 2006. Of course the techniques and materials used in digital photography work today versus the equipment, techniques and materials used in 1904 are completely different animals. How many gum bichromate prints have you ever seen or worked with? Edward Steichen felt comfortable in his medium. The photograph above is one of three existing bichromate prints that Steichen made from the same negative. It had been part of the Gilman Paper company collection of 8,500 images acquired by the Netropolitan Museum of Art in 2005. Since the MET already owned one of the other prints of the image (the third is at the Museum of Modern Art in New York), the museum decided to sell it along with other material at Sotheby's auction.

The bidding at the auction was hectic and frenzied but in the end astonished everyone observing by bringing in $14,982,900! The digital photography work currently spreading throughout the world simply is not ready for prices like these. Many art insiders think the results reflect a steep, upward trend in prices for photography work in general. In November, 2005, a Richard Prince image became the first single photographic work to break the $1 million dollar barrier. Edward Steichen's single image above sold for $2.928,000 dollars! The most expensive single photographic image sold to date putting it in the higher echelons of painted images. "The Pond---Moonlight" was taken in Mamaroneck, New York, near Long Island Sound when the photographer was in his mid-twenties.

The enormous sale price is certainly a good omen for the future of photographic images and especially so for images created with digital photographic equipment and special effects that can render perfection out of anything a creative imagination can come up with. Digital photography work is still in its childhood. The art that digital photography work brings to us is unique and personal to each photographer. As prices for digital images rise, more and more digital photographers will make the world their stage. In the near future, 'a picture that is worth a thousand words' may also be 'worth' a thousand dollars.
